Safe Job Procedures (SJP) and Safe Work Procedures (SWP) are documented, task-specific instructions that outline how work is to be performed safely. They are developed using the findings of our Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) and translate identified hazards and controls into clear, step-by-step procedures for workers to follow.
At MGI, these procedures ensure that all tasks—whether critical or routine—are completed in a consistent, controlled, and safe manner.
The difference between an SJP and an SWP is based on the level of risk associated with the task, as identified through the JHA risk assessment process.
Safe Job Procedures (SJP) apply to critical tasks—activities that present a higher risk due to the severity of potential injury, exposure, or incident. Tasks identified as critical typically have a risk rating of 12 or higher before controls are applied.
SJPs provide detailed, task-specific instructions, including:
- Step-by-step work sequences
- Identified hazards and consequences
- Required controls using the hierarchy of controls
- Mandatory PPE and safety equipment
- Roles, responsibilities, and supervision requirements
- Emergency considerations and stop-work conditions
Critical tasks such as equipment operation, demolition, abatement, working at heights, excavation, hoisting and rigging, and traffic control are governed by Safe Job Procedures to ensure the highest level of risk control.
Safe Work Procedures (SWP) apply to non-critical or lower-risk tasks where hazards are present but can be effectively managed through standard controls and routine safe work practices.
SWPs focus on:
- Safe methods of performing routine tasks
- Identifying common hazards
- Required PPE and basic controls
- Expectations for worker behavior and compliance
While these tasks may not meet the threshold of a critical task, SWPs are still essential to maintaining consistency, preventing incidents, and reinforcing safe work habits across all job sites.
